"Do you know when you'll be chatting with the band?" a text arrives. "I wanted to ask if I can become their newest bandmate."

However, there remains one problem: The sender also longs to be Haim's additional sibling. Furthermore, we are far from alone. A host of celebrated supporters have openly begged for the honor.

One thing is obvious something is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their musical journey performing shows at small eateries with their parents. Today, they are multi-time Grammy Award hopefuls.

Like all the greatest groups, they're a tight-knit unit. Their music videos frequently feature them striding in harmony down the avenues of Los Angeles. In concert, they perform with such pure joy you inevitably think, "I want to be a piece of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that young girls told us and said, 'Watching you live, I got a bass'," states Alana, the youngest of the trio. "It is the ultimate compliment. That's an award in itself. We've done our job if we can motivate people to form a group."

"And thus all is invited to be the honorary part of the family."

Award Milestone

The group have called into a break, where they're recovering after an lengthy tour in promoting their latest album, I Quit.

They're currently celebrating the news it's been shortlisted for a top rock honor at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering all-female band ever in contention for the award.

"I follow the announcements every year, so it sort of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is read out," says Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I dreaming'?"

The importance of the nomination is deeply felt by the trio.

"We truly set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a significant achievement," adds Alana. "Yet we're just appreciative for the pioneers that paved the way."

Emotional Upheaval and Humour

The album emerged from a time of transition. All three sisters were single, and the music inhabits that strange in-between place where you're happy to be free, but not entirely ready to start anew.

The themes track departures and farewells. The sisters desire love, but not the specific love they've got. You can hear them figuring out in the moment who they aspire to be.

"That's a perfect way of putting it, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is like a slogan. You have to consciously practice ignoring the outside opinions and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Development of Sound

That newfound toughness called for a different sonic direction – more organic and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that was founded on the percussion.

"Drums are such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our memoir," jokes Alana. "I always say, our albums won't commence until we find the perfect drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Camaraderie

The trio's openness fueled the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters disclosed some of their personal tales.

One man ended things with Este over a health consideration. Alana shared a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"When you're going through these breakups, you just feel like there's no light," explains Alana. "So to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's so amazing."

A Confident Future

You can clearly sense a evolution in the band. Now, Haim are more certain of their place in the rock pantheon.

They're major draws, with chart-topping albums and an worldwide fan base.

However Haim will consistently be their number one commitment.

"We have been making music since I was little," concludes Alana. "There is nothing else that we were meant to do. And I'm really fortunate we've made it and we're still making music."
